The Training:

On the 25th November we're offering Accessible Content Training to 20 organisations across York.

This will be a 3 hour interactive session, held online and run by Content Design London (a company working to train future leaders and transform content in to something useful, usable and safe).

The course explains how accessible content benefits all users. It will also help you to understand the legal requirements your organisation must meet for digital content.

Who is it for?

You should have some experience writing and creating content or work/volunteer in a role related to content.

What you'll learn

You'll learn about creating inclusive content that:

  • is accessible to people with conditions that affect vision, hearing and cognition

  • fits the way people real online

  • meets legal requirements

Through discussion, real world examples and exercises - you'll learn about the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and best practice for:

  • headings

  • link text

  • colour

  • images and alt-text

  • audio

  • video

How you'll learn

The training itself is delivered by Content Design London

It's a 3 hour long course (from 1- 4 pm), which includes:

  • 50 minutes of introductions, getting to know each other and outlining the community of practice

  • 10 minute break

  • 1.5 hours of presentation, discussion and exercises

  • 10 minute break

  • 20 minute question and answer session

Why are we doing this?

One cross-cutting theme that repeatedly comes up is the need to make sure that those who are often excluded are able to participate. To tackle this, we're committed to ensuring that the way we communicate is accessible.

The Accessible Content Fundamental course will teach us how to make our content inclusive and accessible to people with conditions that affect vision, hearing, and cognition. It will also give us knowledge about the legal requirements within this kind of work.

Understanding the cost

This training is completely free for activists, grassroots groups and voluntary/ charitable organisations.

Any organisation with an income of over £1 million that would like to join will be charged £70 ( which is the cost per person).

Community of Practice

We know that training is only the first step to improving our communications. We therefore want to create an Accessible Content Community of Practice to help us all to embed our learning from the training, share ideas and hold each other accountable.

Our hope is to create a space specifically for those people whose paid or unpaid work to tackle social injustice in York involves communications. What this will look like in practice will be decided collectively.

As community members are applying the skills they've learned, they'll be able to lean on each other for support, discuss any issues they're coming up against and to share helpful tips.
