Why are we doing this?
One cross-cutting theme that repeatedly comes up is the need to make sure that those who are often excluded are able to participate. To tackle this, we're committed to ensuring that the way we communicate is accessible.
The Accessible Content Fundamental course will teach us how to make our content inclusive and accessible to people with conditions that affect vision, hearing, and cognition. It will also give us knowledge about the legal requirements within this kind of work.
Understanding the cost
This training is completely free for activists, grassroots groups and voluntary/ charitable organisations.
Any organisation with an income of over £1 million that would like to join will be charged £70 ( which is the cost per person).
Community of Practice
We know that training is only the first step to improving our communications. We therefore want to create an Accessible Content Community of Practice to help us all to embed our learning from the training, share ideas and hold each other accountable.
Our hope is to create a space specifically for those people whose paid or unpaid work to tackle social injustice in York involves communications. What this will look like in practice will be decided collectively.
As community members are applying the skills they've learned, they'll be able to lean on each other for support, discuss any issues they're coming up against and to share helpful tips.
