Welcome

York Together exists to build a fair, just, and sustainable York - where the power sits within communities, wealth is shared, and people come before profit.

A popular tourist destination, York's historic town centre may look picture-postcard, prosperous and progressive, but poverty, inequality and injustice persist. Change is needed.

We focus on the sparks of change already burning across the city: grassroots projects, local groups, and community campaigns led by people with lived experience of the issues they’re taking on.

Our role is to stand alongside this work - building connections, removing barriers, and sharing resources where they’re needed. By adding kindling to these efforts and backing potential wherever we see it, we help good work that already exists take root, spread, and become visible.

Sparks of change

There are already many people and groups working tirelessly on the ground within York's communities to achieve equality and justice. People who are deeply committed to their cause, have spent time learning the extent of the issue and are rooted in communities and networks of others doing the same.

We offer them various types of support and in doing so we can amplify marginalized voices, bolster new and invigorating ideas, and create space for different ways of doing things to flourish and grow. Take a look at what we're up to.

Tired of injustice but not sure where to start?

We understand that the world feels increasingly difficult - unfair, divided, and, quite frankly, broken. However, we do believe there is hope and that collectively we can make a difference. We're here to support anyone who may feel angry, frustrated, or motivated to do something, even if they’re not sure exactly how. We're always up for a chat and you can email us to talk things through.

The kindling

We offer practical, hands-on support to help great ideas get bigger and burn brighter, especially where access to funding or lack of resources are a barrier. We're also here to help sustain projects that are already underway or winding down.

Here’s what we do:

We offer free training to local community organisers across a variety of topics to enhance their skills and confidence. We also hold 121 support meetings for anyone working to benefit their community - no matter what stage they're at in their journey.

Practical support

We are committed to participatory forms of grant funding and wealth redistribution. We offer direct, no-strings-attached funding to individuals and grassroots groups trying to make a difference in the community.

Funding

We create a space for local organisers and activists to learn together, share ideas, and build relationships. We reject the notion of scarcity and competition, and instead want to encourage togetherness, solidarity, and collaboration.

Connection

Change making

We believe that how we act as an organisation can create change, whether this is the way that we build relationships, how we talk about the work that we do, or how we centre trust in our funding practice. We want grassroots groups to be able to draw on the power, experience and resources that we have to support them to create positive change.
